Shibarium's Troubled Debut Leaves $2.6M Stuck in Broken Bridge

Shiba Inu's Ethereum layer-2 network, Shibarium, ran into serious trouble almost immediately after launch, leaving about $2.6 million in user funds stranded in a malfunctioning bridge.

The chain was built to give SHIB holders a dedicated layer-2 environment for DeFi, GameFi, NFTs, and general on-chain activity around tokens like BONE, LEASH (both down roughly 30% following the incident) and TREAT (unreleased at the time).

Shortly after Shibarium went live, transactions on the network stalled entirely, and SHIB fell close to 10% once it became known that the chain had stopped producing blocks. A developer connected to the project posted candidly on X: "We fucked up hard, we can't recover the ETH bridged." Whether that turned out to be true remained an open question.

Because Shibarium was not producing blocks, withdrawals could not be initiated from the layer-2 side of the bridge. At the time of writing, the bridge contracts held 1,008 ETH (about $1.8 million) and 635,000 BONE (about $774,000) — BONE being Shibarium's designated gas token — and deposits kept arriving at both contracts even after news of the problem had spread.

There was still a path to recovery, however. Because the bridge contracts are upgradeable proxies, developer pcaversaccio pointed out that the funds should be retrievable, provided the proxy owner still controls the relevant private key: the implementation contract could be upgraded, funds recovered through an owner-only function, and a claim mechanism set up for affected users. As pcaversaccio also noted, the fact that this route exists at all is itself a reminder that upgradeability introduces its own security tradeoffs.

Shiba Inu's official channel pushed back on the panic, with a Shib blog post stating "ALL IS WELL" and asserting that a circulating screenshot suggesting the funds were permanently lost was fabricated.

While the situation appeared recoverable rather than catastrophic, it served as a reminder of the risks involved in treating memecoin ecosystems as more than speculative assets.

Separately, in another bridge-related development around the same time, Thorchain paused its network after disclosing a production bug, with the team stating a fix was expected within 24–48 hours. Thorchain had previously appeared on rekt.news on two occasions, both in July 2021, including one incident involving a design vulnerability in the RUNE token that caused a spillover scam affecting holders. This time, the issue was caught before causing major damage, sparing Thorchain another entry on the leaderboard.

Bridges remain one of the more fragile and high-risk components of crypto infrastructure, despite being effectively unavoidable for users moving across chains — underscoring why the engineering behind them needs to meet a higher bar than it often does. As newer generations of memecoin projects push older ones toward more ambitious infrastructure like dedicated L2s, incidents like this raise the question of whether that added complexity is actually warranted.
